Scything in the Prairies

August 2008

Using old-world scythes, Jim Voris and Ryan White  hand-mow invasive weeds like sweet clover and wild parsnip at Galloping Hill Prairie.  A growing number of volunteers meet on Monday mornings at 7 am and while listening to the morning birds and the rhythmic “swish” of their scythes, they accomplish important restoration work.

“Tamara Voris took this shot at 7:30 am this morning (Monday, August 18) out at Galloping Hill. I thought it was a nice reminder to us all as to why we are working out there. The scythes were singing early today, as were the Scythians, and the prairie is better for it”, said  Jim Voris.
